Director of Admissions Francis Francois will present “Transforming Education through
Social Entrepreneurship,” a free public seminar about the education field.
The educational system is in a state of flux, with growing
pressure for educators to innovate—but resources are scarce. Social

environment. It also provides an opportunity to resolve issues that many educators
face. This special presentation will outline how instructors can apply
SE theory to positively impact their local communities and schools.

CINCINNATI, OH –Union Institute & University alumna Portia Simpson Miller and leader of Jamaica’s People’s National Party (PNP) was re-elected prime minister after the PNP earned the majority vote in the country’s general elections December 29. Simpson Miller, the first female to lead Jamaica, earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Union’s Florida Academic Center in 1997 and expressed her gratitude for her alma mater in her January 5 inaugural address.
“As the newly elected prime minister, the Honorable Portia Simpson Miller brings a wealth of knowledge about public service, commitment to others, and intellect to the office that bodes well for Jamaica in future days. Union is proud to have the Prime Minister as a graduate, and we wish her and her administration well as she continues her impressive leadership journey.” said Union Institute & University President Dr. Roger H. Sublett. “She is one of the most dynamic political leaders I have met in many years; in watching her interact with the people of Jamaica, her love of Jamaica and its people is obvious to all.”
Three representatives from Union, including dean emeritus Dr. Marie Bogat, academic advisor Angela Byles, and former dean Dr. Michael Tredinnick, were invited to attend and represent Union at the prime minister’s inauguration. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Simpson Miller asked each of them to stand up to be acknowledged, and expressed her deep appreciation to her alma mater. “It was such a proud moment for Union,” said Byles. “Although she acknowledged several world dignitaries, Union was the only educational institution mentioned. It was a wonderful moment for Union to be recognized worldwide.” Later, at a reception, Byles was able to present Prime Minister Simpson Miller with a proclamation issued by President Sublett.
Affectionately known throughout Jamaica as “Sista P,” Simpson Miller has consistently advocated for the country’s struggling poor. In her victory speech Thursday night, she vowed to "unearth the greatness that lives in every single Jamaican," despite the country's huge debt burden - the catalyst for the early election that resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the ruling Jamaican Labor Party. According to Jamaican news station TVJ, the PNP won 41 seats in the Jamaican parliament and the labor party earned just 22 seats. The Miami Herald called the election a “landslide victory” for Simpson Miller and the People’s National Party.
The 66-year-old Simpson Miller was first elected Jamaican prime minister in 2006. During her year-and-a-half long tenure, she forged a reputation as a leader who championed for the needs of the underserved. Now back in office, she has promised to create jobs and help lift Jamaica out of its current financial crisis. “We are going to form a partnership with you, the Jamaican people. A partnership with the private sector, a partnership with the media, and a partnership with civil society,” she said in her victory speech Thursday.
In 2001, Union awarded Simpson Miller with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the Florida Academic Center’s commencement ceremonies, where she served as commencement speaker. Prior to serving as president of the PNP, she held numerous roles for the Jamaican government including minister of local government and sport, minister of labor, and minister of tourism and sports. She served as vice president of the PNP from 1978 to 2006.
NORTH MIAMI BEACH – On May 15, Union Institute & University’s Florida Academic Center will honor new graduates who have earned undergraduate or graduate degrees from the private, non-profit university located in North Miami Beach. Louis Albert Jolivert, senior director at BNY Mellon Wealth Management and current chairman of the Miami Foundation’s Board of Governors, will serve as the commencement speaker. The university will also present UI&U board member and former president, Dr. George Pruitt, President of Thomas Edison State College, with an honorary doctorate degree.
Many of the Miami graduates are adults who have balanced work and family commitments with their efforts to fulfill their lifelong dream of earning a college degree. New graduate LaToya Williams, who immigrated to Miami from Jamaica in 2008, earned her BS in elementary education and is the first in her immediate family to graduate. “It has not been an easy road,” said Williams, whose parents are traveling from Jamaica to see her commence. “The classes were very challenging – but with the help and encouragement of Union’s faculty, I was able to succeed and to emerge feeling very empowered.”
Also taking part in this year’s commencement ceremony are two married couples who not only attended UI&U together, but who also work together: Jorge and Marie Guerra are both police officers in the Miami-Dade Police Department, and Yolanda and Willie Jones are officers for the City of Miami. “We supported one another and kept each other going when it got tough,” said Yolanda Jones, who, along with her husband and the Guerras’, earned her BS in criminal justice management.
Union chose Jolivert as commencement speaker for his commitment to service within the Miami community and within his profession. As a servant leader, Jolivert’s commitment to his community is reflected in his day-to-day involvement in its growth. “Miami is an up-and-coming city,” said Jolivert. “It’s experiencing a great deal of growth now, and I’d like to contribute to that, to make it an even better place for people to live. Whether through my work with the Miami Foundation or in other aspects of my life, I work to make this the city of choice, a community of choice.”
Union’s May 15 Florida Center Commencement will take place at 1 p.m., at the Miami Airport Hilton, 5101 Blue Lagoon Dr., Miami. For more information contact Angela Byles at angela.byles@myunion.edu or at 305-653-7141.
Union Institute & University (UI&U), a leader in higher education for adults, will host bachelor of science (BS) information sessions at its Florida Academic Center, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., December 6th and 13th. The center is located at 16853 NE 2nd Ave., #102, in North Miami Beach.
UI&U has been educating South Florida professionals for more than 18 years. The university’s BS program offers a rich academic environment where learners can interact with faculty and each other through low residency and distance learning options. Among the most popular programs are early education, social work, psychology, business management, and criminal justice management. UI&U’s education program prepares Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master’s of Education (M.Ed) learners to teach in Florida schools. In addition, the University offers professional development courses for educators to fulfill continuing education requirements.
Union is currently accepting applications for their Winter term which starts January 5. Interested learners are encouraged to enroll soon. Early registration, says Francis Francois, admissions director for UI&U’s Miami Center, enables learners to better prepare for the upcoming term, allowing them more time to save money, and to better familiarize themselves with online learning methods.

MIAMI, FL- In keeping with its mission of social responsibility, Union Institute & University (UI&U) today announced a full tuition scholarship available to learners during their student teaching semester. UI&U learners enrolled in UI&U’s teacher certification program are eligible for the scholarship, which waives their entire tuition while they student teach.
“We believe our learners deserve our full support in their efforts to accomplish this important educational goal,” said Dr. Marie Bogat, dean of the Florida Center. “Becoming licensed classroom teachers will make all the difference in their future, at the same time that it fulfills the need that presently exists in South Florida for more teachers.”
Union Institute & University administrators and staff decided on the scholarship in response to a number of their students who felt it difficult to support themselves and families while student teaching. Committed to providing a rigorous and progressive education to under-served and non-traditional adult learners, UI&U believes this scholarship will have far reaching and positive implications on the public school system as a whole.
“Since a crucial part of the teacher certification process involves student teaching, prospective school teachers must often quit their jobs in order to accommodate their teaching schedule,” said Frank Scala, coordinator of student teachers for the Florida Center, located in North Miami Beach that serves working adults from around southeastern Florida. “The financial burden is such that many committed and talented educators elect not to go through the process of student teaching rather than complete their degree.”
To be eligible for this scholarship, a UI&U learner must meet all the requirements of UI&U’s Florida-based programs. This includes successful completion of all requirements leading to a Bachelor’s of Science degree in their elected major (Elementary Education K-5, Exceptional Student Education K-12, Physical Education K-12, Secondary Math, Science, English or Social Sciences grades 6-12).
A review committee has been established to oversee that each prospective candidate has met all of the requirements before being recommended into the program.
