Expanded SASS at Florida Center

The staff and faculty of Union Institute & University’s Florida academic center are committed to the success of their students. The center is kicking off the winter 2012/13 term with newly expanded Student Academic Support Session (SASS) hours to accommodate the schedules of busy students.

The center, located in North Miami Beach, will be open every Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm with faculty available to assist students. Help topics cover each student’s specific needs, including writing, APA formatting, Campus Web, and research.

Nominate your favorite Union instructor for the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching

Entries due by January 31, 2013

The Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes the exemplary achievements by Union faculty in the area of teaching. Students, faculty, administration, alumni, and friends of the university may submit nominations, which may be submitted electronically at by January 31, 2013. All UI&U faculty (full-time, part-time, and affiliate) are eligible to be nominated. The award carries a $1,000 stipend.

Nominations should include the following information:

  1. A letter of nomination explaining why the nominee is qualified to be recognized in this manner
  2. The nominee’s most current curriculum vitae
  3. Any documentary evidence in support of the nomination
  4. Information regarding any other financial award or grant that has been received in support of the faculty member’s work that forms the basis of this nomination
  5. The identity of the person or persons making the nomination

Except for self-nominations, the portfolio should not include any confidential information. For self-nominations, confidential information such as dean’s reviews or peer reviews may be submitted in support of the nomination but any confidentiality in that information will be deemed to have been waived.

The awardee will be announced by early April and will be publicly recognized at the October National Faculty meeting as well as the 2013 National Commencement Exercises.

Free Psychology Webinar

“PTSD in Children: Assessment and Treatment Considerations”

Union will be hosting a free public webinar presented by the M.A. with a Concentration in Counseling Psychology program. 

Recent traumatic events have raised awareness of children and psychic trauma. The short and long-term effects on children traumatized by witnessing acts of personal violence and children traumatized in small groups will be discussed. Jerry Fishman, Ph.D., associate dean and faculty in Union’s M.A. with a Concentration in Counseling Psychology will host the presentation.
This event is free and open to the public.
